Damage Prevention and Maintenance of Marine Lashing Equipment

Damage Prevention Measures

  • To ensure the sufficiency of marine lashing equipment, it is necessary to periodically inventory and replenish the marine lashing equipment in a timely manner.

  • Before departure, search the shore work area (including but not limited to the dock and shore crane) to see if any marine lashing equipment has been left behind by workers.

  • The marine lashing equipment's placement after unloading should always be within the watch personnel's line of sight to prevent theft;

  • Before loading marine lashing equipment onto the ship, ensure that every small box inside is not missing and belongs to the ship, preventing misplacement or omission;

  • Supervise whether shore workers have removed the marine lashing equipment from the unloaded containers and placed it inside the box to prevent omission;

  • Supervise the operations of ship lashing workers to prevent them from deliberately discarding marine lashing equipment.

Inspection and Maintenance Program

  • Visually inspect all in-use marine lashing equipment at intervals not exceeding 6 months.

  • Crew members and shore workers engaged in cargo lashing or unlashing are advised to report any defective components. If it is portable marine lashing equipment, it should be placed separately in an appropriate location, such as a locker marked "damaged".

  • Spares of marine lashing equipment should be properly collected and stored.

  • Be particularly cautious of marine lashing equipment carelessly taken ashore during

  • unloading, especially twist locks, which should be returned immediately and ensured not to be replaced with equipment not used by the ship.

  • Marine lashing equipment should also be frequently inspected. If deformation or damage is found upon inspection, it should be promptly repaired or replaced. Equipment requiring lubrication, such as turnbuckles and semi-automatic twist locks, should be lubricated regularly to maintain operational flexibility.

  • Crew members should be familiar with the characteristics and usage methods of various marine lashing equipment, correctly use various marine lashing equipment, and check whether the locking position is in a locked or unlocked state.
